January is over already, that seemed to go by fast!  Looks like this issue of the TIMES has a BRAINFREEZE flavour.

BRAINFREEZE - CANADIAN RUNNING MAGAZINE
This appeared recently in Canadian Running magazine’s online edition.
If you’re looking for a chance to run a half-marathon in -20 C, don’t delay; the early-bird deadline for the Saskatoon Brainfreeze half-marathon is on Jan. 31.

The Brainfreeze, which takes place the first weekend of March, is a fundraiser for the University of Saskatchewan cross-country teams.

“You can’t really charge admission for cross-country meets like you do at football games,” race director Matt Mazurik told Canadian Running. Since the Brainfreeze began in 2009, the event has raised about $30,000 to support Huskie runners, who volunteer on race day — and in the weeks before — to help organize the race.

About 200 runners are expected to brave the cold for this year’s race on March 4, making it one of the most popular winter running events in the prairies.
If you’re interested in signing up, the early-bird deadline for both the half-marathon and the 10K is January 31. The 10K costs $40 and the half marathon is $50; both those prices increase by $10 on Feb. 1.
For more information, or to register for the race, visit the race websiteand download an information package or the registration form.

Note; last day to enter will be March 3, no race day entry.

Well it’s just a few days until Christmas and we’re still hoping for a White Christmas.
When Brian and I were in Austin a couple of weeks ago I found it odd to see Christmas
lights and hear Christmas music with no snow and leaves still on the trees. Guess it is
what you are used to no matter where you live. Just doesn’t seem right without lots of
clean, white snow.
About 60 to 70 walkers and runners came out this past Saturday for our annual Christmas
Social. People visited and enjoyed coffee and snacks prepared by Caffe Sola. Our
favourite baristas Sarah and Jeff were on hand to prepare the drinks. Ric and Susan
Hanna were there to see who would be presented with the Ric Hanna leadership award.
Jan Stirling was very surprised to be named the 2011 recipient of this award. Jan often
leads a walk/run group at Run Club, she helps out at the annual shoe give away, and any
time we ask for some help Jan is there. Thanks and congratulations Jan.

above is a picture of Jan receiving the award from Ric and Brian.
A bit of background on this award. Ric is a long time Saskatoon runner who in his prime
was a very swift runner with times that would easily win the Saskatchewan Marathon
today. Ric inherited Huntington’s disease which over the years has really taken it’s toll.
Despite this Ric continued to attend Run Club and was willing to lead groups. Several
years ago it became impossible for Ric to lead but he still wanted to. It was this example
of leadership that we wanted to highlight and we introduced this award to recognize
someone at Run Club who showed great leadership qualities. Past recipients are Dave
Stark, Peter Goode, Kevin Sutton, and now Jan Stirling joins the ranks.

A good number of Saskatchewan runners were in Las Vegas on the weekend to run the Zappos Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon and half marathon.  Congratulations to BRAINSPORT owner Brian Michasiw for placing 10th overall and first in his age group with a time of 2:40:46 running an average 6:09/mile.  Here is the link to the search page for results http://running.competitor.com/cgiresults?eId=27&eiId=61 .  Sounds like quite the event with 44,000 runners.  I’ve already seen reports on Facebook that the 38,000 half marathon runners made it difficult for many of the marathon runners to get by them.  So if you would rather run in a less congested marathon the Saskatchewan Marathon would be perfect for you.  Just saying.

Coming up next in our race preparation plans is the BRAINFREEZE clinic;
