We recently received a comment asking us about what sort of cost effective activites there are for tweens in Saskatoon, and we thought we'd post the expanded answer in a permanent place for you all. Here are some options:
At the city's site, check out pools. The price is only $3.75 to swim any day (or your family can all go for only $12.50).
The city also has a FREE Summer Youth Camp for those 10 - 18. It's located at all leisure centres and runs most of the summer. Check out the info here for details.
Speaking of the City of Saskatoon, check out their Leisure Guide - not everything is cheap, but it's probably one of the best sources for finding activities for most budgets. Whether you're looking for something sporty or arty, it's got it. It lists all the Leisure Centre hours, locations and available activities as well.
Most churches have Summer camps in the city that are free or only pennies a day.
Try geo-caching. It's free, and has loads of local participants. You need only a cell phone or GPS (which you likely have, or borrow from your parents). Check it out here.
A good resource in Saskatoon is the Saskatoon Tourism site. They list loads of things to do around the city.
There are many galleries and museums around the city that don't charge admission, if you'd up for a learning experience. The University of Saskatchewan has severel, and the Mendel comes to mind.
The city is loaded with trails and paths to walk and bike (I'm a fan of the trails along the river, personally. Lots of trails of varying difficulty, and exploring them all would take the better part of the summer).
The Saskatoon Public Library usually has a great series of programs as well, and they tend to be very budget friendly or free. Check out their site here.
Can't forget the summer festivals. Not all of them are free, of course, but many do have free elements. The Jazz Festival boasts several free stages, for example. The Fringe Festival has inexpensive tickets to all of their shows, and just wandering up Broadway watching the street performers and window shopping at the booths and street vendors is a lot of fun.
Have fun!
