Saskatchewan roughriders logoThe Saskatchewan Roughriders, first known as the Regina Rugby Club, had their first game on September 6, 1910 with their original colors of gold and purple.  The club then changed it's name to Regina Roughriders in 1924 and changed the teams colors to red and black.  After numerous team color changes, the Saskatchewan Roughriders changed to green and white as we know them today.  In 1948, the football club became provincially owned an operated and changed their name to the "Saskatchewan Roughriders".

Their are two different theroies on where the name "Roughriders" came from.  The first one states that "Roughriders" came from The Royal Mounted Police who were called the roughriders because they broke the wild horse bronocs used by the force.  The second one states that there was a Canadian contengint who fought with Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War.  Roosevelt's troops were known as the Roughriders.  The color of Roosevelts infantry were red and black.

In 1966 the Saskatchewan Roughriders captured their first Grey Cup also winning in 1989, and their most recent win in 2007.
